Spray Combustion and Injection Processes

© Institut für Technische Verbrennung

The areas of application for spray combustion range from road transport, shipping and aviation to stationary gas turbines. The special feature of spray combustion is the efficient utilisation of fuels with a high energy content but low volatility. Atomisation into fine, small droplets plays a decisive role here.

At the ITV, the physical relationships between the processes of injectors and spray nozzles are being investigated under application-relevant conditions. In the past, the processes within the injectors in diesel engine direct injection were analysed on optically accessible injection nozzles at injection pressures of more than 800 bar. The primary jet break-up was also analysed using the optical connectivity method. Other important target variables such as droplet diameter, velocity and spray angle are measured using laser measurement techniques. The knowledge gained helps to further optimise and validate existing simulation models.
