Combustion Technology Laboratory

As part of their academic studies, students can analyse the properties of various premixed flames on a test burner in our combustion technology laboratory.

Schematic experimental setup

Description

In this laboratory, students investigate the three essential criteria of combustion.

  • Interaction between the flow form and the combustion process
  • Mixing processes of fuel and oxidiser
  • Temporal characteristics of a combustion process

In the experiment, the kinematics of a laminar Bunsen flame is first analysed using a CCD camera. The dependence of the laminar burning velocity on the equivalence ratio is then determined from the flame front recorded at a fixed position. Flame stabilisation is further investigated using a wire-stabilised V-flame and the range of stability is explored. Finally, the dependence of the flame temperature on the equivalence ratio is investigated for a turbulent Bunsen flame.
